Perugia and Assisi Private Day Tour Through the Green Heart of Italy

Between Tuscany and Rome lies a region that most visitors miss entirely – and that is precisely what makes it so extraordinary. Umbria, the only landlocked region of central Italy, is a land of hilltop towns, medieval monasteries, rolling green valleys and some of the most profound spiritual heritage in the world. This Perugia and Assisi Private Day Tour takes you to its two greatest treasures – Perugia, the magnificent capital of Umbria, and Assisi, the birthplace of Saint Francis, whose gentle revolution changed the Christian world forever.

Itinerary

Your guide meets you at your hotel for a scenic drive through Tuscany and into the green hills of Umbria.

Perched dramatically on its hilltop above the Tiber Valley, Perugia is one of Italy's great medieval cities - and one of its least discovered. Home to one of the oldest universities in Europe, its cobblestone streets wind between Gothic palaces, Etruscan arches and Renaissance fountains. At the heart of the city lies the Piazza IV Novembre and the extraordinary Fontana Maggiore - one of the finest medieval sculptures in Italy. Your guide will bring this fascinating city to life before you continue south to Assisi.

Few places in the world carry the spiritual weight of Assisi. This perfectly preserved medieval hill town was the birthplace of Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone - known to the world as Saint Francis - whose radical embrace of poverty, nature and humility changed Christianity forever. Visit the magnificent Basilica di San Francesco, where Giotto's legendary frescoes tell the story of his life across walls of breathtaking Gothic architecture. Discover the Basilica di Santa Chiara, resting place of Saint Clare and home to the original San Damiano Cross. And descend to Santa Maria degli Angeli - the vast basilica built around the tiny Porziuncola chapel where Francis gathered his first followers and where he died in 1226.

Florence welcomes you back - its art, its energy, its beauty unchanged. We hope Umbria has left something quieter and deeper with you. And whenever the next adventure calls, we will be here.
